There is a little bit of something in everything and that's what I like to explore.

Visions of Hildegard: In Visions of Hildegard, Christopher Hynes interprets the contemplative spirituality of Hildegard von Bingen through painting. Each work becomes a meditation in shape and color to invite viewers into a quiet space of reflection. The orbs, recurring symbols in Hildegard’s own writings and illuminations, echo her visions of the great unknown cosmos and her mystical experiences of astral travel. The herbs are a visual reference to Physica, Hildegard’s treatises on medicinal plants, one of the first compendiums of herbal properties and remedies of European plants.

This body of work emerged from a collaboration with jazz composer Alex Coke and forms the visual counterpart to the music of Dreaming Hildegard. The paintings are created with pigmented plaster on wood panels. In some, touches of gold and silver composite leaf reflect spiritual awareness and the luminous beauty of Hildegard’s manuscripts.
